Los Alcazares Mar Menor: One of the many delightful coastal resorts located on the shores of the Mar Menor Sea in the Murcia region of Spain, Los Alcazares is also one of the most popular. Its resident population of 15,000 and its many thousands of visitors, enjoy wonderful sunny weather conditions, a healthy living environment and access to some of the finest beaches in the region, together with fabulous golfing facilities, and easy road access.

History of Los Alcazares: Today Los Alcazares has the look of a typical Spanish seaside resort, but of course this is due to modern day influences and this has not always been the case, although even as far back as Roman times, the area was renowned as being healthy and used for convalescence and recuperation, with spas being established for this purpose.

The all conquering Moors also realised these benefits but added extra value to the areas around Los Alcazares, by improving the irrigation of formerly barren land. It was also the Moors who brought some innovative fishing techniques to the Mar Menor, the shallow waters of which are not conducive to traditional fishing methods, the town thus became important for fishing.

When the Moors were finally driven out of Los Alcazares (and eventually the whole of Spain), the town and region fell into decline and became depopulated. Several watchtowers were constructed to warn of pirate attacks, but later there was little to attack, and the area was forgotton and neglected for several hundred years.

Only the founding of a hermitage during the 19th century, finally attracted people back to the town, and its many possibilities were once again realised, as the rich people of Murcia city began to build holiday homes beside the beaches. The late 20th century of course saw a tourism boom which attracted those of other nationalities to the town.
